How much did we $make$ with 5.7K Subscribers on YouTube in 2022
Finally, it's now time to check out how much did we make in 2022?
Alright, before we open up the numbers for 2022 and show you how much we earned as a small youtube channel, here is a brief introduction about us. I and my partner run a YouTube channel together, called Kritika & Pranav | Programmer Couple, where we make content related to — coding, and programming tutorials(everything from basic JavaScript, and Angular to Cloud functions, and more). Moreover, as a Full-Stack Web Developer turned technical Project Manager, I also make content on Agile (Technical) Project Management, career, productivity, and basically everything tech.
So, here’s a sneak peek of our analytics for 2022. Let’s first start by checking the views we got and where we were in terms of subscriber count at the beginning of the year v/s where we stood by the end of the year.
Seems like we were off to a very slow start. As you can see, the line there is really towards the bottom, and on average, we were getting about 800 views on a daily basis. However, as we progress through the summer, we had a couple of “viral” videos; And by viral, we mean like 3K-4K views on one video, given we’re still a very small but growing YouTube channel. So, in May the average view per day was around 1.2K. Then it dropped back to 500, right before you see a gradual, pretty consistent increase to an all-time high so far of a whopping 3K views per day. Again, not a huge channel, but a huge achievement at the time.
Maybe you won’t agree with me on this, so to put things in perspective let me put it this way — Imagine yourself sharing your knowledge with a room full of 3000 people sitting right in front of you. Goosebumps, anyone?
Now, the game started changing in September. That’s when our YouTube Shorts(or short videos) started picking up and this gave us enough motivation to get serious about our content, as a result, we started posting pretty consistently. Also, the results started showing, look at a spike around the month of November. This has now become the most successful month for our channel, in terms of the number of views, about 8K views a day. Woohoo!
Now, I know you’d be very intrigued to know the subscriber count leading to these many veiws...
Well, at the start of 2022, we were at 1.8K subscribers. However, it gradually but exponentially increased to 5.79K subscribers towards the end of 2022, which almost is 3x speed. Obviously, these numbers make us very happy, but we’re just getting started here, there’s still a very long way to go! However, before we proceed, we’d like to take a moment and thank all of you because you are the one who is watching our videos, and showing your love and support by leaving your comments, hitting the like button, and subscribing to the channel.
On a side note, here’s something interesting that a lot of people who do/don’t watch YouTube videos might not know, how YouTube pays us? So there’s something called RPM and there’s something called CPM. In short, it basically is a measure of the dollar amount creators are going to be paid for every thousand views that they get on their channel. Usually, if you have a YouTube channel related to beauty or finance content, those people get paid very well. Let’s say on average for every thousand views, they’re getting about 50 bucks, whereas for us, because we run a tech programming channel which caters to a niche audience therefore, there’s not a lot of direct advertising, and consumer targeting opportunities for companies, therefore, the revenues can be pretty low for the same amount of views. So, if you’re planning to start a YouTube channel, maybe look into finance or beauty space unless you know exactly what you want to do. Makes sense?
Finally, it’s now time to check out how much did we make in 2022? Let’s start with January — we started with $39 in January. Now, the interesting thing to notice here is that as our channel grew and our subscribers increased, the revenue was still dropping down a bit. Evidently, the revenue from here on until August was about $35 per month. Well, the reason it dropped was that there was an ongoing recession at the time and companies were not willing to spend as much on advertisements.
While in September/October the revenue went back to around $39, which was basically where we started from back in January, then came November, and a miracle happens! We earned three times the amount that we usually earn on our YouTube channel from AdSense. In November, our estimated revenue was $105. Then again, in December, the revenue tanked but it still was higher than $39 — which was the usual average. The growth we saw in November and December was because of the holiday season. Companies love to spend on Advertisements during this period as their conversion chances are much higher than the usual times as consumer spending increases way above the usual limits during holiday seasons.
I know what you’re thinking now! What’s the final number?
We made exactly $537 and 7 cents ;) from YouTube AdSense.
Now let’s break down this number and see how much money did we make per video we posted on YouTube. It was $3.80 for each video we created. So, as you can see for yourself, it is not the fastest way to become the richest, a billionaire, or even a multi-millionaire. As a matter of fact, we make videos because we actually enjoy making them and it gives us an opportunity to keep on learning new things.
As you’re reading this article, you know that we also have this blog as another source of revenue for our “business” :P which comes out to be around $170 in 2022.
So, the grand total of our revenue for 2022 comes out to be a whopping sum of $700 for the entire year.
Considering all things, we are very excited for our journey going forward, and also to see how it’s going to be in 2023. As we still remember when we created our very first videos, the audio and video quality were subpar, our confidence was super low, and the lighting was pretty bad — that being said, you might’ve noticed we are constantly improving everything and we are actually having fun in the process. All in all, we are very excited to see what the future holds for us!
On a closing note, I’d like to mention that I wrote this article to tell you all about our numbers and our income because we want to be completely transparent with our audience and also document this process, document our journey as we go, because we really feel that the best way to learn something is to learn from other people’s experience, then go out there and do it for yourself, this way you know what can be done differently and the mistakes to avoid. So, if you’re thinking about starting a YouTube channel or doing something similar to what we are doing today, I hope our experience is helpful for you and that you get to learn something from it.
So that’s it for this article. We’ll be back next year with a similar article where we discuss how much did we make in 2023.
